How Can I Relieve My Anaemia Symptoms?

Author: Dr Mosaraf Ali
Source: ezinearticles.com

Anemia literally means lack of blood. More precisely, it’s a problem with hemoglobin the oxygen-carrying pigment in the blood. It can be seen quite easily: some one with anaemia looks pale with pale skin, lips and inner rims of the eyelids. Sufferers seem to have a degree of what you might call power failure, with symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, depression, a sinking feeling blurred vision and frequent infections. They may also experience food and/or sugar carvings, general sluggishness, cold hands and feet, and put on weight easily – all connected to a poor metabolism.

Blood consists of blood cells and platelets, which swim in a colourless liquid called plasma. Red blood cells are the most abundant and also the most specialised cells in the body, as they transport oxygen and carbon dioxide; without them, the body simply can’t survive. White blood cells are part of our immune defences, and platelets enable the blood to clot. The red blood cells contain hemoglobin, a powerful compound consisting of an iron-containing pigment called ‘heme’, and ‘globulin’, a protein. Haemoglobin has a vial role in the supply of oxygen to the body, facilitating the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide. Heme also contains cobalt, a micro-element that acts as a catalyst in the exchange of these gases. Meanwhile, the iron is responsible for binding oxygen molecules in the lungs and then releasing them to target cells.

Body cells only function optimally if there is enough oxygen and if carbon dioxide, a waste gas, is removed efficiently. If there aren’t enough red blood cells, or they are smaller in size, the haemoglobin’s capacity to supply oxygen is reduced. This Oxygen starvation affects every system in the body, producing the symptoms above. Also, people with anaemia often suffer from breathlessness, due to the lack of oxygen, and palpitations, as the heart beat faster to try to improve the oxygen supply.

The most common type of anaemia is due to iron deficiency, which in my view is mainly due to lack of protein from a strict vegan or vegetarian diet, anorexia, as well as some kidney problems and burns, which destroy protein. A deficiency of vitamin B12, which forms the nucleus of the haemoglobin, folic acid or vitamin B6 can cause pernicious (megaloblastic) anaemia. There are other, rarer forms, including sickle-cell disease and thalassaemia (both inherited conditions), plus haemolytic and aplastic anaemia.

Because you have nausea and digestive problems, I suspect that your problem is iron deficiency anaemia. (l assume that your GP has organised blood tests,) Iron is absorbed mainly in the stomach and any problems with its lining will affect absorption. Gastritis, stomach ulcers, acidity, eating too many acid foods, infections such as helicobacter pylori, drug-related gastritis (from steroids or pain killers for example) and stomach surgery will reduce the stomach’s capacity to absorb iron. Parasites (worms) can also cause iron-deficiency anaemia Since you have both digestive and skin problems, you may have yeast overgrowth or candidacies. These conditions can be symptoms of a leaky gut, where the gut wall has been perforated by yeast overgrowth (or other factors), which then get into the bloodstream causing a host of problems. The itching and rashes may be because the body is trying to eliminate toxins through the skin…

I advise an all-round approach to treatment lf you just treat the anaemia wont give you the results you hope for.

These are my suggestions

Diet

* Eat small, regular amounts of calves’ liver and red meat’ fresh organic eggs (bled, semi-boiled or poached), spinach, broccoli, cherries, aubergines, avocado, and pomegranate, red

apples, carrot juice. Take ten almonds and brazil nuts, soaked in still water for 24 hours, daily. These are all ‘known to help blood synthesis in traditional medicine.

* To improve digestion: avoid citrus and sour foods (eg orange, rhubarb, Pineapples, kiwi, vinegar), chilies, deep-fried foods, unsoaked nuts and seeds, plus painkillers (unless you really have to take them); also yeast products, sugar and alcohol.

Remedies

* Take Iron tablets, one daily for three months.

* Take two twigs kadu and one third teaspoon full kariatu powder; soak in a cup of hot water over night strain and drink in the morning on an empty stomach.

* Take Stomach Formula tablets, one twice daily for two months to control excess stomach acid.

How to Maintain the Health of Our Eyes?

Author: Cliff Krause
Source: ezinearticles.com

Our eyes are vulnerable to some diseases as we age. When we are over forty, we may suffer from presbyopia; when we are over fifty, we may suffer from Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD), which can always lead to irreversible blindness. Here we are going to introduce something about AMD and some methods of prevention. The mechanism of AMD is the blood vessels in our eyes may become very fragile and the blood flow into our eye tissues. The most direct result is blurriness as a result of macular degeneration. However, as the conditions get even worse, our eyes will be in complete blindness.

That’s to say; once the macular is damaged or thinned, our vision will be influenced. The reason is our retinas are protected by the macular pigment from coming light. The thinner our macular pigment is, the worse our eyes are. In fact, some substances play very important role in the protection of our eyes. For example, Lutein is a very effective antioxidant substance than are very useful in the protection of macula.

The scientists have not found such a method currently that can be employed in the cure of Macula Degeneration. But prevention is much important than treatment. Some very common methods can be used for the prevention of such diseases. Following are they.

We should first know what AMD is and what the cause of it is. Some bad habits can reduce the density of macula pigment. Such as, smoking and drinking alcohol can be very irritating for the macula; working under too bright light, as the sun and computer, can also reduce the density of the pigment. As mentioned above that lutein is very effective antioxidant substance which can help slow the process of macula degeneration. In this sense, it is very essential for us to intake foods that are abundant with lutein.

In fact, other materials can also help to slow the process of AMD. Thus, we should intake more other vitamins and mineral, while ingesting lutein. Some eye doctors recommend that there are four substances that are vital for the health of our eyes. The first one is, no doubt, lutein that is a kind of very effective antioxidant substance. It is very nice for us to use some lutein pills that are extracted from marigold plant. It is true that these pills are expensive, but effective.

The matter of fragility in the blood vessels can also be prevented by taking Bilberry in which flavanoids and anthocyanin are contained. Our eye muscles can be benefited a lot from this substance. Taking such pills everyday is essential.

The problem of bad elasticity in the blood vessels can also be avoided by intaking some grape seeds extract. If our blood vessels lose their elasticity, we will suffer a lot. These pills can help prompt the circulation of our blood. Take some everyday.

The commonest Vitamin C is still very important, for it is essential for the synthesis of some tissues. Like lutein, it is also an antioxidant substance. Take some Vitamins C pills everyday.

Improve Skin Tone And Reduce “Age Spots” (Without Plastic Surgery)

Author: Deidra Garcia
Source: isnare.com

Few things can damage the skin’s natural appearance as much as rough patches, unsightly dark spots and uneven skin tone (also called hyperpigmentation; age, sun or liver spots; or solar lentigines).

Research indicates that more than 50% of men believe dark spots make them look older and devitalized. What is even more surprising is that more than 50% of men don’t know hyperpigmentation can actually be treated successfully, resulting in an overall healthier and younger looking complexion.

Uneven skin tone is very common, often starting to appear in men in their 20s as a result of cumulative sun exposure. It tends to get accentuated with time, so prevention and early treatment is a good idea.

Use a product with an active skin-fading ingredient. This is indispensable if you really want to see some results. Hydroquinone is the gold standard (1% to 4% concentration) used by dermatologists and skincare professionals to fade dark areas. Hydroquinone is very effective if used regularly for 4-8 weeks. Some redness might develop during treatment, so you should consult your dermatologist if you have sensitive skin or if irritation persists. Kojic Acid and Vitamin C are also used professionally to even out skin’s coloration, and can complement the effect of Hydroquinone.

Gentle exfoliation will help shed the darkened, superficial cells and expose new undamaged cells. Glycolic Acid is the most recommended product for mild exfoliation. This should also improve the absorption of Hydroquinone, significantly improving the final results.

Protect yourself from sun exposure. Sun exposure stimulates pigment production, so don’t expose your skin to the sun while you are trying to fade dark areas. Fading dark spots requires a sustained approach during several weeks while pigment production reaches normal levels and the superficial cells are replaced by new cells, but the results will be worth the time investment.

Laser Hair Removal With IPL

Author: Mike Matthews
Source: articlesbase.com

Women (and men) have been trying to get rid of unwanted hair for centuries. Shaving, plucking, waxing and chemical depilatory agents have been used by literally billions of people for thousands of years. Yet, the latest trend in hair removal promises long lasting, less painful results than any of these methods.<br><br>Both the trendy and not so trendy flock to the new laser hair removal treatment centers to receive the latest technology in smooth, hairless skin. The procedure is described as safe, using a very low level laser beam. The laser?s energy enters the pigment inside the hair follicle. As the energy heats the pigment, the hair?s root is destroyed but the surrounding skin remains unharmed. The follicle is also ?deactivated,? reducing regrowth.<br><br>For most, the procedure takes from 15 minutes to just over an hour, depending on the size of the area to be treated. The process is virtually painless, with most patients experiencing a slight stinging sensation. Of course, the more sensitive the area, the more likely that some unpleasant sensations will occur. For the more sensitive areas, a topical numbing cream may be used.<br><br>Since hair grows in cycles, it may take several sessions to remove all of the hair in an area, but once the treatments are completed the results are extremely long lasting. Not only are the treatments quick and painless, but they are surprisingly affordable as well. <br><br>There are many laser hair removal clinics in the UK. Choose one that uses an FDA approved laser specifically designed for hair removal. Different lasers are used for different skin types, so check to see if the laser used by the clinic is right for your coloration. Make sure that your technician is certified and fully trained on the equipment being used.<br><br>Interested to join the ?in crowd? and try laser hair removal? Not only will you be surprised at the great, long lasting results, but you?ll be in on the newest grooming craze to hit the UK in decades!<br><br>

Laser – A Noninvasive Method Of Hair Removal

Author: sashi
Source: articledashboard.com

Hair removal is a vague term that has only recently been accurately defined. Temporary hair reduction is defined as a delay in hair growth, which usually lasts 1-3 months, consistent with the induction of telogen. Permanent hair reduction refers to a significant reduction in the number of terminal hairs after a given treatment, which is stable for a period of time longer than the complete growth cycle of hair follicles at the given body site.

Demand for a rapid, noninvasive method for hair removal has resulted in the introduction of various light sources for hair removal. Light source of hair removal commonly focuses on ruby, alexandrite, diode, and Nd:YAG lasers and intense pulsed light sources. These devices are designed to target either an endogenous chromophore (melanin) or an exogenous chromophore (carbon suspension, photosensitizer, and exogenous dye). Laser hair removal is one of the most recent systems of hair removal that has been introduced. Today, a large number of specific laser systems are available in the market, which makes the customer a bit apprehensive about their attributes, selection, treatment protocols and effects. Laser hair removal is one of the light sources of hair removal.
Hair follicles are destroyed by light in a number of ways such as thermal, photomechanical or photochemical mechanism with generation of toxic mediators like singlet oxygen or free radicals.

Thermal mechanism for hair removal has recently been introduced to induce selective damage to hair follicles. Based on the principles of selective photothermolysis, this principle predicts that selective thermal damage of a pigmented target structure will result when sufficient quantity of light at a given wavelength is absorbed by the target in a time equal to or less than the thermal relaxation time of the target.

Melanin is the natural chromophore for targeting hair follicles in the visible to near-infrared region, Lasers or light sources that operate in the red or near-infrared wavelength region lie in an optical window of the spectrum in which selective absorption by melanin is combined with deep penetration into the dermis. Therefore, deep and selective heating of the hair shaft, the hair follicle epithelium, and the heavily pigmented matrix is possible in the 600nm to 1100nm region. However, melanin in the epidermis presents a competing site for absorption. Selective cooling of the epidermis has been shown to minimize epidermal injury.

Photomechanical destruction of hair has been attempted with very short nanosecond pulses. It has been done by the help of Q-switched 1064-nm Nd:YAG lasers, with and without carbon suspension. Short pulses are used to target hair follicles resulting in rapid heating of the chromophore (melanin). It leads to photo acoustic shock waves that cause focal photomechanical disruption of the melanocytes but not complete follicular disruption. Therefore, the Q-switched Nd:YAG lasers are not likely to produce long-term hair removal.

A distinction needs to be made between permanent and complete hair loss. Immediately after laser treatment, the hair shaft shows fragmentation with focal rupture into the follicular epithelium and thermal damage to the surrounding follicular epithelium. The extent of thermal damage is dependent on the pulse width but retains confinement on the spatial scale of the follicle itself. Histological changes are almost guaranteed in the person undergoing laser hair removal. However, such form of hair removal should be carried out under the supervision of a qualified dermatologist as it involves considerable degree of expertise.

Gorgeous For a Buck!

Author: Olesya Novik
Source: ezinearticles.com

Many of you have been asking for affordable ways to look your very best, and it became my goal to hunt down the very best cosmetic products that would fit in any budget.

As I was searching for a brand I’d trust enough to recommend to all of you, I remembered one company in particular whose many products I sampled and loved. I’ve been using their glosses, eye shadows, liners, and brushes right alongside my much more expensive products for nearly a year now, and they really hold their own!

The brand I’m speaking of is E.L.F. Cosmetics. They’re a breakthrough company in my eyes, as they’ve figured out a way to bring high quality makeup at prices more affordable than even those of drugstore products!

Now, I know it’s hard to shop for new cosmetics blindly, so I’ve decided to write up an article to review some of my personal E.L.F. favorites to give you ladies a starting point. Let’s get to it.

Eyes

Mineral Eyeshadow

Without a doubt, one of the “stars” of this line. This shadow comes in quite a few shades, really lasts, and works either wet or dry. For a daytime look, I like to dip a moistened liner brush into the darker shades and line my eyes with it, then use that same shade in the crease over a lighter color.

The ones I seem to use most often are Golden, Earthy, and Sweet over my entire lid, and Glamorous, Royal, and Seductive to line and contour. At only $3 a pop, you can experiment to your heart’s content!

Eyeshadow Primer

Those of you with oily skin, living in humid climates, working in hot environments, or just liking to see your eye makeup still intact after a 10-hour day will appreciate this stuff as much as I do.

E.L.F. markets this product as a “Mineral Eyeshadow Primer” to go along with their mineral shadows, but I’ve used it with a variety of loose shadows, and it always works to prevent my eye makeup from creasing, flaking, and otherwise becoming a mess within a few short hours of application.

This product works the same way Urban Decay’s Primer Potion does, but for less than quarter of the price, at only $3!

Liquid Eyeliner

If you’ve never used a liquid liner but like the sexy “cat eye” look for a night out, or even a subtly lined eye that lasts all day without smudging, you’ll love this liner! It comes with a harder tip than most I’ve tried, so it’s easy to control and apply right where you want it, creating the perfect line.

I also love the fact that it comes in so many colors. I’ve tried it in Plum, Coffee, and Black – and all worked really well for me. The best part is, you could collect all nine colors if you wanted to, as each is just a $1!

Falsies are perfect for a more dramatic look!

Eye Makeup Honorable Mentions

E.L.F. false lashes are absolutely fantastic! They have a pretty wide selection of them at only a dollar each – and that includes the glue!

I’ve also tried their duo shadows, which I liked over the primer. They aren’t heavily pigmented, but are perfect for someone not after an overly dramatic look or simply inexperienced with makeup application.

Lips

Hypershine Lip Gloss

This is one of my first E.L.F. purchases, and it’s one of my favorite! It’ll leave your lips very shiny, it’s moisturizing, and it comes in great shades – Fairy happens to be my favorite, it’s a pretty iridescent gloss that works on its own as well as it does over your favorite lipstick.

The best part? It’s only a buck!

Plumping Lip Glaze

The tingly lip plumping effect of this stuff is comparable to Lip Venom, the biggest difference being its scent (this is minty where Lip Venom is cinnamon-flavored), and the price.

Lip Venom sells for $16. E.L.F.’s Lip Glaze is only a dollar! Not kidding, the same product, for just a $1!

Plumping Lip Glaze comes in a double-ended tube – one side contains a sheer color gloss, the other side’s clear. I have it in a nude tone called Champagne, and usually layer the clear gloss over the color.

Full lips — for a dollar!

Luscious Liquid Lipstick

For times when you want more visible color with good staying power while keeping your lips moisturized, E.L.F.’s liquid lipstick is the perfect choice. This isn’t a completely opaque lipstick, but it definitely isn’t as sheer as gloss.

I have this in Bark, a pink-nude, and Brownie Points, a darker brown-nude. Both create that “your lips but better” look, and smell amazing – think mint and vanilla. The best part? You can experiment with all the shades you want, as each is only… you guessed it, a dollar!

Lip Makeup Honorable Mentions

Feather Proof Moisturizing Lip Liner is something I recommend checking out if you want to play with more opaque looks. It goes on smoothly, doesn’t dry out the lips, and has good staying power – all at being just a buck each.

The Super Glossy Lip Shine SPF 15 is one of my niece’s favorites, as it provides a subtle bit of color while smelling amazing, comes in lots of great shades, and is still just a dollar per gloss – sunscreen and all!

Face

All Over Cover Stick

If you’re in search of a concealer that won’t cost you an arm and a leg and still help you achieve flawless skin, then finding this is like finding a gold mine! You get a pretty good amount of this creamy corrective product for only a dollar.

It’s pretty heavily pigmented and will cover most flaws, my only gripe is that it doesn’t last all day for me – but that can be said for just about every other concealer I’ve used, including those that were 50 times the price!

Studio Contouring Blush and Bronzing Powder

If you use blush and bronzers, or if you’re just curious to experiment with them, this is a must-have! You get a full size blush and bronzer in a single compact, both for only $3.

When I first tried this product, I was actually expecting it to be a complete disappointment, as that’s my usual experience with drugstore brand blushes and bronzers. These colors and the quality of this makeup, however, really delivered – the colors themselves are nearly identical to Nars Deep Throat blush and Laguna bronzer, the combined cost of which would be $50!

Think I’m exaggerating? Watch the video below, and you’ll see what I mean.

Brushes

Brushes are often key to getting your makeup to look just the way you want it, and good brushes are not cheap! Over the years, I’ve collected ones from just about every makeup brand out there – from Chanel and Dior, to cheaper drugstore alternatives that I’ve since retired to the back of my drawer.

A good brush can make a huge difference in your final look, so this isn’t an area I generally like to compromise. I decided to give E.L.F. brushes a shot after reading some positive reviews about them, and boy am I ever glad I did!

I started with the Studio Powder Brush, and loved it so much, that I wanted to see how their other ones compare. I’d since purchased the 11 Piece Brush Collection from the Studio line, and all have been nothing short of phenomenal.

I can honestly say that I use them as frequently as I do my other brushes, for which I paid 20 times as much! Each E.L.F. professional quality brush is only $3!

Complexion Enhancers Honorable Mentions

In all honesty, I’m not through trying all of the face products just yet, though I must say, I’m yet to be disappointed with anything I’ve purchased from the Studio collection. Bronzers, blushes, and dusting powders have all been surprisingly high quality and very, very similar to much more expensive brands.

I highly recommend checking out the entire brand with an open mind. And hey, even if you really hate whatever it is you bought, what’s a buck for a little experimentation?!

Have fun shopping, guilt free, courtesy of E.L.F. Let me know what you end up trying!

What Are The Best Natural Remedies For Age Spots And Beyond

Author: Kerri Doyle
Source: articlesbase.com

If you search the internet you’ll find millions of sites yelling about natural remedies for age spots but before you click on any link you must understand the root cause of age spots and how to treat the same. Age spots are caused by a pigment called melanin. Degree of Melanin present in our skin determines the color of skin. When our skin is exposed to UV rays of sun this pigment breaks down and starts accumulating in various part of our body like back of hands, neck and face. This accumulation is seen as brown spots or liver spots. If you are looking for natural remedies for age spots — then you should target solutions that help you to reduce the accumulation of melanin pigment. More and more people are flocking towards the natural treatments instead of artificial treatments like chemo or acid burning. It is because the side effects of such artificial treatments are horrible and are almost permanent. Moreover these treatments are repetitive and expensive. Without much ado let’s explore various natural remedies for age spots that we can use Home Remedies Lemon Juice – Its use on skin is very beneficial. If applied on the affected area of skin it gives wonderful results by reducing the spots in couple of months. But you have to be careful while using this because of the acidic nature of this juice. Since Vitamin C content is very high in it, people with dry skin should not over do it it will make their skin even drier. Aloe Vera This is by far the most common used substance for skin as well as hair. Aloe vera is extremely soothing on skin and has anti inflammatory properties. It provides moisture to skin and helps in giving a smooth texture to skin. And of course prevention is better than cure make sure whenever you go out in sun you protect your skin from direct sunlight. Either use a natural sun screen or use hats and umbrellas to protect your skin. Home remedies can help only to a certain extent but if you are really serious about getting rid of these spots you must choose a skin care product that is targeted to reduce the accumulation of melanin. I would like to emphasize a point here that natural remedies for age spots is not limited to just use of home based treatments. There are skin care products that are made of all natural and organic ingredients. They have no side effects at all. These products also qualify as natural remedies for age spots. Don’t just pick up products that say melanin on the ingredient label instead pick products that help you reduce melanin accumulation. Skin Care Products There are skin care products that contain Extrapone Nutgrass Root this is a herb found in eastern continents and is used in many skin care remedies. The most striking quality of this herb is to check the accumulation of melanin in skin. When applied topically it gets absorbed by the skin and then it attacks the patches of melanin. It has been proven in labs that use of this ingredient can reduce the spots by more than 50% within few weeks. The best thing you can do for your skin is; start checking out the products online and grab the best product. If you are interested in learning how to avoid harmful products and select the best ones that can help you remove the age spots and at the same time treat the skin for dryness, dullness and wrinkles visit my website.

How to Apply Mineral Makeup

Author: alleysmith
Source: articlesbase.com

Mineral makeup is here and it looks like it is going to stick around for quite a while. Whether you are going to be a first-time user of mineral makeup, or you’re a regular user, you need to know how to apply it. It might seem difficult at first and you might need to practice it for some time till you can be perfect at it.Mineral pigments can give your skin a healthy glow that looks natural and, unlike traditional makeup, adheres to your skin all day without the need for touch ups, even if you perspire or go in the water. Mineral makeup blushers are used primarily to give the cheeks color, whereas mineral bronzers can be applied anywhere on the face and body that would normally develop color from being in the sun.Open the mineral makeup foundation and a tiny amount into the cap of the bottle. If this is overmuch, try putting in your finger and add more if necessary. Then you apply eyeliner and use your kabuki brush to dust off any powder droppings from your cheeks.Mineral makeup blushes are designed to brighten your complexion, while still looking natural. The goal is to have your makeup look natural – not look like you have on makeup. A tapered makeup brush works best for blush application. Pat the minerals onto your chosen brush and sweep softly over the cheeks to accentuate the shape of your face.To apply these mineral beauty products to the skin, use small amounts of mineral makeup and apply with gentle strokes made with special brushes. Every woman can have a fresh and flawless look that lasts for hours in just 5 minutes time. The minerals used in these cosmetic tools are very simple to use, mainly because it is an all-natural product.Using a Kabuki brush (sold wherever mineral makeup is sold), dip the bristles into the makeup. You won’t need much of it to use on your face. Tap the handle of the brush against the lid with the bristles facing upwards. This spreads the mineral foundation throughout the bristles of the brush as well as removing any extra from the brush.Begin applying the eye liner shadow at the outer corner of the eye, just outside of the lash line. Work from the outer eye towards the bridge of your nose, stopping where your lashes end. To keep the eye liner looking subtle and natural, gradually make the line finer as you inward.Place a small amount of mineral powder into the lid of the foundation jar. Swirl your brush in the lid, to help the mineral powder adhere evenly to the bristles of the brush. Then tap the brush on the lid to remove any excess minerals.Using a fluffy face brush is the other popular way to apply mineral makeup. Better quality makeup is more pigmented, so using a kabuki is out of the question for most women. But a nice fluffy brush is just the ticket since a little makeup goes a long way. Whether you choose synthetic or animal hair brushes is up to you. Both can be equally good, depending on the quality.

Planning a New Kitchen Worktop

Author: Alex Winward
Source: ezinearticles.com

A properly chosen and fitted worktop can make all the difference to your kitchen – like no other room a kitchen has to be efficient, clean, functional and at the same time is probably the one people use to judge you the most. So, let’s put some effort into some ideas to make it look stylish, with no compromise over its cleanliness or efficiency.

A properly fitted kitchen can make the kitchen the true heart of the home (and let’s face it we all tend to gravitate there at parties…). For the purposes of this article I am going to be looking at the worktop, as it is, I would argue, the most important area of your kitchen, both aesthetically and functionally.

The first thing to consider of course is colour. Your worktop should of course coordinate with the rest of the kitchen, and there are different colour ranges available depending on the material you choose. Granite for example is limited to the colours of the rock where it was extracted, Quartz and Corian having a much wider gamut as they use man-made pigments to give them their colour. Other substances, like wood, are pretty much self-explanatory. So, if you have your heart set on electric blue or candy-apple red, Granite is not going to be for you.

If there is going to be many funky lines, curves and sweeps in your kitchen, then it may well be worth thinking of Corian, which can be shaped very much easier than either granite or quartz, and whose texture lends itself so much better to an ultra-modern look. For simple square surfaces, there’s probably nothing more beautiful than a big slab of granite.

Next you have to think about sinks. One with a separate drying basin? What sort of drainage grooves do you require? How to fit the sinks – seamless or classic, Corian, or stainless steel? It is well worth looking round the web to find examples of installations you like because the big limit here is your imagination!

Next upstands (also called splash backs) protect your wall from knocks and stains, and has the quality of visually anchoring your surface to the kitchen wall. Suppliers give a few options for these so it is worth looking into before you buy to make sure you are getting the effect that you really want.

Edging is another facet of worktop choice that has to be factored. Most suppliers give many options on this, but common types are finishes like rounded, square, beveled, grooved and so forth. These often have their own pricing and intricate edging can add to your cost. When you order your worktop, you will be asked how many sides need edging and how long the sides are, unless of course you get the whole thing measured and fitted for you.

So, back to materials. Wood and laminates are self-explanatory, but Granite, Corian and Quartz need a little explanation. Granite is the king of worktop surfaces: beautiful, natural and with a deep shine. Although more expensive, and requiring a little more upkeep, granite is most definitely the premium choice. Quartz is a partially synthetic material, made of 97% crushed stone (usually, erm, quartz) combined with man-made polymers and pigments so that it has a comparable hardness to granite, but with the advantages of being completely non-porous and is available in a wide array of colours and finishes. Corian is a completely synthetic material, basically a man-made stone, that can be joined seamlessly and invisibly, can be moulded at very high temperatures and and is available in a huge range of colours.

So, I do hope this helps with some of your choices for the kitchen. Of course, a trained and helpful staff will always be able to help further with your decision making, but this should be enough to set you upon the road of discovery for your kitchen worktop.
