When I was in my early 20s, I was dealing with a skin condition that my dermatologist couldnt explain, and it had me hiding in my house. I was diagnosed with vitiligo which showed up as irregular patches of pale skin – mostly on the top of my feet and behind my neck.

I was so upset because I was living at the beach and having a tan was so important to me. Tanning was the worst thing to do if I wanted to hide the white spots that wouldnt tan on my skin. My doctor prescribed a steroid cream and antibiotics – they didnt help at all.

For most people, vitiligo is a chronic condition. For me that was not the case. Mine went away when I started to adjust my diet and started to drink raw juices and make other positive lifestyle changes.

At that time, I didnt know exactly what made it go away, just like I didnt know what brought it on.

Now, after a few decades of study and experience in holistic health, nutrition, detox, and alternative medicine – I have a hypothesis related to vitilago. I never read any material about this anywhere, but like often occurs with me I determine helpful approaches to health challenges by combining my knowledge, experience, common sense, and intuitive abilities.

Ill tell you my hypothesis. I wont go into how I came to my hypothesis other than to say that right before I had my case of vitilago I was put on lots of antibiotics for bronchitis and other respiratory issues. I also was dealing with some major life stressors.

My hypothesis is that Vitilago is a systemic fungal condition similar to, if not, Candidiasis (yeast overgrowth). Internal fungal overgrowth often shows up on the skin (psoriasis is another skin condition affected by this).

Overtaxed adrenals are often at play here as well – so stress can play a big part in contributing to this. Often Candida issues go hand in hand with stressed adrenal glands.

One of the best ways to combat a fungal problem is to not feed the fungus (it LOVES sugar – so sugar and simple carbohydrates like bread and pasta – are a big no no) and to use a natural anti-fungal substance (Im not talking about man- made medications – antifungal meds are chemicals that are often extremely harsh on the liver). Also, resting and nourishing rests the body to lessen the stress hormones released by the adrenals.

In my opinion the best natural anti-fungal substances come from our plant kingdom (nature takes care of nature) specifically therapeutic essential oils. Many of our essential oils have anti-fungal properties (and they smell so good!) such as Purification and Melrose.

There are many different techniques to remove unwanted hair. Some of these include waxing, shaving, coils, electrolysis and laser. Although each has its advantages and disadvantages, they all perform the same function. That is removing unwanted hair.

One such technique that has become quite popular these days is laser hair removal. This technique works by using a laser on the hair at a specified wavelength that emits a specialized light. The light from the laser is passed through the skin and is absorbed by the hair follicle. This light actually targets the melanin (colour) in the hair follicle and damages it, thereby causing the hair to fall out. Interestingly, the use of certain laser for removing hair has been approved by The Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Although the technique is popular, there are advantages and disadvantages of using this method.

Advantages of Laser Hair Removal

The laser hair removal process has advantages in that larger areas can be treated. In addition it is also safe enough to be used on all parts of the body such as the face, back, underarm, bikini line, legs and arms. Compared to electrolysis, it is less painful as the laser only causes a slight burning sensation compared to the needle prick feeling of electrolysis. Unlike shaving or waxing, laser hair removal is usually long lasting.

Disadvantages of Laser Hair Removal

One disadvantage for laser hair removal is that not everyone is the perfect candidate for this type of treatment. Those with lighter skin and dark hair have a much higher chance of permanent hair removal than grey, red or blonde hair. In addition, those with dark skin or who are tanned are also not good candidates as the laser may cause damage to their skin due to high pigment levels. The reason being is that dark hair contains a pigment called eumelanin which effectively absorbs more laser energy and therefore results in more effective destruction of the hair follicle. Due to the higher effectiveness of the treatment towards dark haired fair skin patients, it leads to fewer treatment and is therefore less costly. Other the other hand, grey, red and blonde hair contain a pigment called pheomelanin that absorbs less laser energy reducing the effectiveness of the treatment. Therefore extra treatment is required for the same effect. So before you sign up for this treatment, make sure you know the principal of this treatment. If you are not an ideal candidate, be prepared for extra treatment charges.

Laser hair removal is expensive due to the multiple treatments required. The reasons is that hair grows in a cycle that ranges from approximately 6 to 12 weeks and this is the amount of time that it takes hair to grow from the base of the follicle to the surface of the skin. As hair grows during these cycles, only a portion of the hair is being treated during this growth period with each laser treatment. Therefore multiple treatments (approximately four to eight depending upon your colour of your hair and skin) are required during this growth period. This is so that each treatment allows total coverage on all hairs during the various growth cycle. This can range from approximately a four to eight week interval. As discussed above, darked hair patients with fair skin require less treatment.

The average cost per treatment ranges from $500 and about four sessions are required. Again, this number will differ depending upon the size of the area treated and the colour of your skin and hair. To get an exact cost, a consultation on pricing is an individual process and it is best to discuss this with the laser center.

Once you have decided to undertake this treatment, make sure it is performed by an experienced laser treatment centre. Due to different state regulations, there has been varying level of compliance with laser hair removal centres and this has resulted in improper treatment by unskilled clinics. Some states require a doctor to perform the treatment, whilst for others; anyone including unskilled personnel can perform the treatment. Read the latest news on laser hair removal for more information. These improper unskilled clinic may result in burns (similar to sunburn), lesions, skin discolouration that can last several months, or patchy/patterned regrowth. One rule to remember is that cheaper is not always the best, so find the best laser hair removal centre around.br

Freckles are brown spots on face especially on nose and cheeks which common in individuals with fair complexion. They might be as small as a pinhead or slightly bigger. They can be round or flat. Melanocytes are cells located in the lowest layer of our skin called epidermis. Melanocytes produce pigment called melanin, which is secreted when skin gets exposed to sun to protect the skin from ultra violet rays.

Uneven distribution of melanin causes its excessive secretion in some patches resulting in formation of brown spots known as freckles. They might get reduced when exposed to cold weather but increase when skin gets exposed to high temperature. As a result in some cases freckles may fade away completely in winters and gradually return in summers. Freckles also fade away with age. Tanning causes rapid increase in production of melanin thus causing increased number of freckles around cheeks and on nose.

MYTH: FRECKLES ARE CANCEROUS
No, freckles are NOT cancerous. They are just a form of pigmentation due to over production of melanin in the skin. Most of the times it is difficult to distinguish between freckles and brown spots. Visit a dermatologist before going in for any kind of treatment to know whether the appeared pigmentation is freckles or brown spots. Brown spots can be pre cancerous or cancerous.
Treatments suggested for freckles

Laser Treatment-Laser treatment can be opted for as the freckles melanin pigment absorbs the rays of laser light easily thus fading away slowly.

Sun Screen – As exposure to the sun is the prime reason behind the occurrence of freckles, it gets mandatory to wear a strong sunscreen lotion to avoid the ultra violet rays from penetrating into the epidermal layer of the skin.

Cryosurgery: Though this method is not very often used for removal of freckles but in some cases individuals have been seen opting for this surgery. Liquid nitrogen is applied on the affected areas with a pray gun or a cotton tip. But sometimes it causes appearance of permanent white spots due to long and direct contact with nitrogen.

Bleaching creams: Bleaching creams can be used to minimize freckles on the skin. Problem related with the use of bleaching creams is that it bleaches the entire skin thus resulting in same colour difference between the pigmented skin and normal skin. Retin-A is recommended to minimize the occurrence of freckles, as it tends to normalize the pigmentation.

Above mentioned methods can free your skin from brown spots thus enabling you to have a beautiful and clean face.
